The College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences is seeking a strategic and technically advanced Cybersecurity and Systems Administration Lead to oversee the provisioning, security, quality assurance, and integration of systems and processes across the Arts and Sciences portfolio. This role is critical to the long-term success of our IT infrastructure and operations, and will serve as the lead architect for secure, scalable, and resilient systems. This is an individual contributor leadership role: rather than managing direct reports, the Lead advises, supports, and sets technical direction for our teams across Arts and Sciences. We are looking for a visionary technologist who thrives in complex environments, brings innovative solutions to challenging problems, and can guide technical direction across the organization. The Lead joins an Arts & Sciences IT team of roughly two dozen technologists spanning systems and cloud applications, endpoint operations and distributed department support, web development, analytics, and knowledge systems. Working across these groups rather than managing them directly, the Lead sets security and systems-administration standards, advises the systems leads on application and cloud security, supports endpoint operations on endpoint protection, mentors junior engineers, and represents A&S in central University security initiatives. Successful candidates will be resourceful, fast learners, and customer service focused. This role operates on a standard business-hours schedule with no on-call rotation; best-effort availability for occasional after-hours critical issues is appreciated, but the expectation is business hours. If you're passionate about cybersecurity, systems architecture, and leading transformative IT initiatives, we encourage you to apply! Job duties include: Security and Systems Architecture Help lead the design and implementation of secure, distributed computing architectures supporting storage, database, and web infrastructures. Develop and enforce cybersecurity policies, procedures, and standards aligned with University and external regulations. Administer and monitor system security, including vulnerability management, log analysis, and role provisioning/de-provisioning. Serve as the subject matter expert on the school’s security and systems management toolset. Systems Administration and Integration Oversee change control, provisioning, and integration of systems across platforms including Windows, MacOS,

About cybersecurity governance roles

Cybersecurity governance connects security control frameworks to business and regulatory risk, covering policy, risk assessment, and control assurance rather than hands-on operations. Roles like this one are typically evaluated against frameworks such as NIST CSF, ISO/IEC 27001, SOC 2, and security risk and control-assurance practices.

How to position yourself for this cybersecurity governance role

Strong candidates emphasize security control frameworks, risk assessment, policy and standards, and translating technical security posture into governance and board-level reporting. In your resume and outreach, tie your experience to how University of Virginia would apply NIST CSF, ISO/IEC 27001, SOC 2, and security risk and control-assurance practices, and lead with concrete outcomes rather than duties.
