Government is hiring AI governance leaders

The public sector has moved from talking about AI to governing it, and that means new jobs. In late 2025 and early 2026, the Maryland Attorney General's office advertised an Artificial Intelligence Strategy and Governance Manager, and the City of Seattle advertised a City AI Officer. These are not one-offs. State attorneys general, city governments, and agencies are standing up AI governance roles to set policy, manage the risk of AI used in public services, and keep the technology accountable to the public.

Because they are government roles, they open and close on a fixed schedule and reopen as programs grow. The two above have closed, but the category is expanding fast, and more are coming.

What these roles do

Public-sector AI governance roles own how an agency uses AI responsibly: writing AI policy, running risk and impact assessments, ensuring transparency in automated decisions, and aligning with the NIST AI Risk Management Framework and emerging public-sector rules. They sit where technology, law, and public accountability meet.
