Governance, Risk and Compliance Jobs in Geneva: A Career Guide

Geneva has two job markets for governance, risk and compliance: the international organisations, and the banks and wealth managers. Here is who hires, which rules apply, and what the numbers say.
Geneva is a small city with an unusual job market for governance, risk and compliance. According to the Swiss Mission to the United Nations, the city hosts 42 international institutions and organisations, about 750 NGOs and the permanent representations of 185 member states, and about 33,000 international civil servants, diplomats and civil society staff work in the Lake Geneva region. Next to that sits a private banking and wealth management sector supervised by FINMA, the Swiss financial regulator.
Where GRC work sits in Geneva
International organisations hire for enterprise risk management, internal audit and oversight, ethics offices, data protection and information security. Each runs its own careers site:
- United Nations careers, vacancies across the UN Secretariat, including the United Nations Office at Geneva
- World Health Organization (WHO), headquartered in Geneva
- International Labour Organization (ILO), headquartered in Geneva
- World Trade Organization (WTO), headquartered in Geneva
- World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), headquartered in Geneva
- The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, based in Geneva
- Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, based in Geneva
Banks and wealth managers hire for compliance, anti-money laundering, operational risk and model risk. Pictet, the Geneva private bank, lists its openings on its group careers site. On this board, Geneva roles appear on the Switzerland GRC jobs page as they are posted; at the time of writing they included anti-financial-crime work at a global bank.
The rules that shape GRC work in Switzerland
No AI act yet. Switzerland signed the Council of Europe Framework Convention on Artificial Intelligence on March 27, 2025. On February 12, 2025 the Federal Council discussed the options for regulating AI and decided to ratify the convention, adapting Swiss law mainly sector by sector. A bill is due to go to public consultation by the end of 2026. As of November 1, 2026 we had not seen that draft published, so there is no Swiss AI statute in force.
FINMA guidance for financial institutions. FINMA Guidance 08/2024, published December 18, 2024, sets out what the regulator expects from supervised banks, insurers and other institutions that use AI. It is supervisory guidance, not a new law: FINMA applies the existing, technology-neutral rules on governance and risk management. It names the main risks as operational, including model risks such as weak robustness, correctness, explainability or bias, plus data, IT and cyber risks, dependence on third parties, and legal and reputational risk.
Data protection. The revised Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP) has applied since September 1, 2023. The Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC) can open investigations and issue binding orders, and data breaches likely to result in a high risk to the people concerned must be reported to the FDPIC. Fines of up to CHF 250,000 can be imposed on the responsible individual through criminal proceedings; the FDPIC does not set fines itself. The FDPIC has stated that current data protection law applies directly to AI that processes personal data.
The EU AI Act reaches Swiss firms that serve the EU. Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 applies to providers that place AI systems on the EU market wherever they are based, and to providers and deployers outside the EU when the output of their system is used in the EU (Article 2). For a Swiss bank, insurer or pharmaceutical company with EU customers, that makes the EU AI Act part of the job.
Pay and the cost of living
The Swiss Federal Statistical Office (FSO) measures wages every two years. Its 2024 Swiss Earnings Structure Survey, published November 25, 2025, put the median gross monthly wage for a full-time job at CHF 7,024 across the private and public sectors. That is a whole-economy figure, not a GRC benchmark, so treat it as a floor for comparison rather than an offer.
Prices are high. In the FSO's provisional international comparison for 2024, Switzerland's price level was 159, against an average of 100 for the 27 EU countries. A salary that looks generous next to Paris or Brussels buys less in Switzerland.
Languages
Geneva is in French-speaking Switzerland. English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. French is an advantage in any role that deals with cantonal authorities or local clients, and it is often required for roles in the cantonal and municipal administration.

Frequently Asked Questions
What GRC jobs are there in Geneva?
Two kinds. International organisations such as the UN, WHO, ILO, WTO, WIPO, the Global Fund and Gavi hire for enterprise risk management, internal audit and oversight, ethics, data protection and information security. Banks and wealth managers, supervised by FINMA, hire for compliance, anti-money laundering, operational risk and model risk.
How does the cost of living affect GRC salaries in Geneva?
Switzerland is expensive. In the Swiss Federal Statistical Office's provisional comparison for 2024, the Swiss price level was 159 against an average of 100 for the 27 EU countries. The FSO's 2024 median gross monthly wage for a full-time job was CHF 7,024. Compare offers with Swiss prices in mind, not with Paris or Brussels salaries.
Does Switzerland have an AI law?
Not yet. Switzerland signed the Council of Europe Framework Convention on Artificial Intelligence on March 27, 2025, and a bill to put it into Swiss law is due for consultation by the end of 2026. Meanwhile FINMA Guidance 08/2024 sets expectations for financial institutions using AI, and the revised Federal Act on Data Protection applies to AI that processes personal data.
Does the EU AI Act apply to companies in Geneva?
It can. Under Article 2 of Regulation (EU) 2024/1689, the Act applies to providers that place AI systems on the EU market wherever they are based, and to providers and deployers outside the EU when the output of their system is used in the EU.
Do I need French for a GRC job in Geneva?
Not always. English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. French is an advantage in roles that deal with cantonal authorities or local clients, and it is often required in the cantonal and municipal administration.
