AI Regulatory Counsel Career Guide: Law and Governance
AI Regulatory Counsel advises an organization on how laws, regulations, enforcement trends, contracts, and legal duties apply to the development, procurement, deployment, and use of AI. The role is not limited to tracking new AI statutes. It often integrates privacy, consumer protection, employment, discrimination, intellectual property, product liability, cybersecurity, records, accessibility, sector regulation, and administrative law.
Counsel interprets requirements, advises on high-risk use cases, reviews product and data decisions, supports impact assessments, drafts policies and contractual terms, guides disclosures, manages privilege, coordinates investigations, responds to regulators, and helps leadership make defensible decisions under uncertainty. Effective counsel works closely with engineers, product managers, compliance teams, risk leaders, privacy officers, security teams, and public-policy professionals.
Employers seek legal research, concise advice, regulatory judgment, negotiation, issue spotting, investigation skills, and enough technical fluency to understand data flows, model limitations, evaluations, and system changes. Candidates should be able to separate binding law, likely enforcement expectations, contractual commitments, and voluntary standards.
The usual path requires a law degree and active bar membership. Feeder backgrounds include privacy counsel, product counsel, technology transactions, cybersecurity law, regulatory enforcement, employment law, financial-services regulation, and public policy. Progression may lead to Senior AI Counsel, Director of AI Legal, Deputy General Counsel, General Counsel, or combined legal and governance leadership. AIGP, CIPP, CIPM, or technical AI education may strengthen specialization.
Prepare by writing a short legal-risk memo for a proposed AI use case. Identify applicable legal domains, unresolved facts, risk owners, required controls, contractual issues, disclosure questions, and conditions for approval.
