Policy Writing Skills

Effective policy writing converts leadership intent and external obligations into clear organizational rules. The writer must define purpose, scope, roles, mandatory requirements, prohibited conduct, exceptions, enforcement, records, and review cadence without confusing policy with a detailed procedure.
Applied skill is visible when readers can determine what applies to them and owners can verify compliance. Avoid vague promises such as “appropriate safeguards will be used.” Name the decision, standard, accountable role, required record, and escalation path. Prove competence by drafting a short AI acceptable-use policy and a companion procedure, showing which details belong in each document.
