About the AI Governance Lead role
The AI Governance Lead owns how an organization builds, validates, and monitors its AI and machine-learning systems in production. The role sets the Responsible AI framework, runs independent model validation, bias and fairness reviews, and AI observability, and partners across engineering, risk, and compliance. It maps to the NIST AI Risk Management Framework, ISO/IEC 42001, and the EU AI Act, and it is one of the fastest-growing seats in enterprise GRC.
BLS put the 2024 median at $78,420. In 2026, market trackers show averages from roughly $99,000 to $120,000, with the top quartile above $160,000. Financial centers and senior governance roles sit at the top of that range.
