About the Chief Risk Officer job
The Chief Risk Officer owns the enterprise view of everything that could go wrong, financial, operational, regulatory, model, and now AI, and the framework for managing it. The role reports to the board, sets risk appetite, and is the counterweight that keeps growth honest. It is a cornerstone seat in banking, insurance, and capital markets, and increasingly in any company whose risk surface is growing faster than its controls.
BLS put the 2024 median at $78,420. In 2026, market trackers show averages from roughly $99,000 to $120,000, with the top quartile above $160,000. Financial centers and senior governance roles sit at the top of that range.
