About the Chief AI Officer job
The Chief AI Officer is the newest seat in the C-suite, and the one every regulated company is racing to fill. The CAIO owns how an organization builds, buys, and governs AI: the risk, the compliance, the ethics, and the board-level answer for what the technology is allowed to do. It sits on top of the NIST AI Risk Management Framework, ISO/IEC 42001, and the EU AI Act. If you can govern AI at the enterprise level, this is the title that did not exist three years ago and now commands a budget.
BLS put the 2024 median at $78,420. In 2026, market trackers show averages from roughly $99,000 to $120,000, with the top quartile above $160,000. Financial centers and senior governance roles sit at the top of that range.
