Entry-Level AI Audit Jobs: How to Break In

AI audit is one of the few genuinely new career openings in a mature profession. Organizations that spent a decade building internal audit functions now have to answer a question those functions were never designed for: is the model doing what the policy says it does, and can we prove it to a regulator?

That gap is why AI audit hires from further afield than most audit roles. Internal auditors moving across, compliance and privacy people who already know how to test a control, data analysts who can read a model card, and second-career candidates from regulated industries all land these jobs. What they share is not a machine-learning background. It is the ability to gather evidence, form a defensible conclusion, and write it down so an executive can act on it.

Know what you would be auditing against

An AI audit is only as good as the standard behind it. These are the three you will be asked about.

Certifications, and which one to sit first

None of these are required to get hired. They are required to get past some filters, which is a different thing. If you are choosing one, CISA is the audit credential that opens the most doors.

  • CISA — ISACA's information systems auditor credential. The default audit certification.
  • CRISC — risk and control. Pairs with audit and reads well on an AI audit CV.
  • AIGP study guide — the IAPP AI governance credential, and the one that signals AI specifically.
  • CISM study guide — security management, if you are coming from the security side.
  • Compare all certifications — costs, domains and what each one is actually for.
