AI Governance Manager, Lead and Director Roles
The senior AI governance roles, what each one owns, what they pay, and what employers test for at manager, lead and director level.
AI governance is the discipline of deciding how an organization is allowed to build, buy, and use artificial intelligence, and proving it does so responsibly. The people in these roles own the AI policy, the risk and impact assessments, the oversight of models in production, and the answer to regulators and the board for what the technology does. It runs on the NIST AI Risk Management Framework, ISO/IEC 42001, and the EU AI Act.
This is the core of the field, the umbrella over responsible AI, AI risk, AI compliance, and the rest. If you can stand up and run the governance function that keeps AI accountable, this is the seat that did not exist three years ago and now sits near the top of the org.
AI Governance Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
What does an AI governance job involve?
Owning how an organization develops and uses AI responsibly: setting AI policy, running risk and impact assessments, overseeing models in production, and answering to regulators and leadership for the technology's behavior.
What frameworks do AI governance roles use?
Most commonly the NIST AI Risk Management Framework, ISO/IEC 42001, and the EU AI Act, often together as a single program.
What tools do AI governance jobs use?
An AI system and use-case inventory, a requirements library holding whichever rules apply to each system, a risk register, a control library, an assessment workflow for new use cases, and an evidence repository. Most organizations put a GRC platform over all of it and wire it into the ticketing system engineering already uses. Naming the vendor matters far less than knowing what belongs in each record and what has to happen when a model, a vendor, or a regulation changes.
What skills do AI governance jobs require?
Process design before configuration, because automating a confused process only makes the confusion move faster. Then data modeling, platform configuration, permissions, workflow logic, APIs and integrations, reporting and data quality. On top of that, fluency in the NIST AI Risk Management Framework, ISO/IEC 42001 and the EU AI Act, and the writing to make all of it survive a legal review.
What does the AI governance workflow look like day to day?
A use case arrives at intake. Someone classifies it, decides which rules apply, and either clears it or routes it to assessment. The assessment produces risks, the risks pull in controls, the controls carry owners and test dates, and testing produces evidence and findings that close on a clock. Then it repeats, because the model changed, the vendor changed, or the law did. Designing that loop, and deciding which steps stay human, is the job.
How do I prove AI governance skills before I have the title?
Build one workflow and show it. Take use-case intake or control testing, define the records, required fields, roles, states, approvals, notifications, service levels, evidence, exceptions, reports and change controls, then explain which decisions you deliberately left with a human. That single artifact answers more of an interview than a certificate does.

AI Governance Jobs jobs: what the market looks like right now
A snapshot built from the 92 AI Governance Jobs roles currently on this page.
What these roles pay by level
| Level | Median midpoint | Postings |

| Mid-level | $168k | 6 |
| Senior / lead / manager | $191k | 27 |
| Director | $195k | 5 |
How these figures were calculated, and sources
Primary source: our own board. Every figure above is the median midpoint of the salary ranges published in the live postings on this page. Nothing is estimated, modelled, or carried over from a previous month. It is recalculated each time the board refreshes.
What is included. Only postings that publish a salary range. Hourly, weekly and monthly rates are annualised (2,080 hours, 52 weeks, 12 months). Ranges below $20,000 a year are excluded as data-entry placeholders. A seniority band is shown only when at least five postings support it; executive / c-suite is present on this page but below that threshold, so no median is published for that band.
What this is not. These are advertised ranges, not accepted offers. Advertised ranges tend to run wider than what is actually paid, and roles that do not publish a range are missing from the calculation entirely, which can bias the result upward.
For an independent benchmark, compare against the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics for SOC 13-1041 — Compliance Officers, published annually at bls.gov/oes. BLS reports actual wages across all employers rather than advertised ranges, so its medians normally sit below job-board figures.
