Data Lineage Skills

Data Lineage Skills illustration

Data lineage traces where data comes from, how it changes, where it moves, and which systems and decisions depend on it. Employers need metadata analysis, process interviewing, SQL and data-platform literacy, source-to-target mapping, ownership identification, change-impact analysis, and documentation.

Applied skill is more than drawing arrows. The lineage must identify authoritative sources, transformations, quality rules, access, retention, and downstream dependencies. Demonstrate competence by mapping one dataset from collection through transformation to an AI feature and report. Mark owners, systems, sensitive fields, business rules, and points where errors could propagate.
