Risk Assessment Skills

Risk Assessment Skills illustration

Risk assessment is the ability to identify uncertain events, estimate their likelihood and impact, examine existing controls, and support a decision. Employers need scenario thinking, structured interviews, data interpretation, control awareness, scoring discipline, residual-risk analysis, documentation, and facilitation.

Good assessors do not hide uncertainty behind a colored heat map. They define the scenario, affected objective, exposure, assumptions, control strength, evidence quality, and consequence of delay. Prove the skill with a completed assessment that includes inherent risk, controls, residual risk, treatment options, owner, target date, and escalation rule. Explain why the rating is justified and what new evidence would change it.
