Controls Testing Skills

Controls Testing Skills illustration

Controls testing determines whether a control is appropriately designed and whether it operated consistently during the period under review. Core skills include defining test objectives, identifying populations, selecting samples, evaluating evidence, reperforming activities, interviewing owners, documenting exceptions, rating findings, and preserving a review trail.

A screenshot rarely proves sustained operation. Testers must connect evidence to the control’s owner, frequency, population, timing, and expected result. Demonstrate competence with three sample workpapers covering an automated preventive control, a manual detective control, and a corrective control. Include procedure, evidence, result, exception, conclusion, and reviewer notes.
