Risk jobs: what the market looks like right now
A snapshot built from the 130 Risk roles currently on this page.
What these roles pay by level
| Level | Median midpoint | Postings |
|---|---|---|
| Mid-level | $126k | 12 |
| Senior / lead / manager | $191k | 28 |
How these figures were calculated, and sources
Primary source: our own board. Every figure above is the median midpoint of the salary ranges published in the live postings on this page. Nothing is estimated, modelled, or carried over from a previous month. It is recalculated each time the board refreshes.
What is included. Only postings that publish a salary range. Hourly, weekly and monthly rates are annualised (2,080 hours, 52 weeks, 12 months). Ranges below $20,000 a year are excluded as data-entry placeholders. A seniority band is shown only when at least five postings support it; director and executive / c-suite are present on this page but below that threshold, so no median is published for those bands.
What this is not. These are advertised ranges, not accepted offers. Advertised ranges tend to run wider than what is actually paid, and roles that do not publish a range are missing from the calculation entirely, which can bias the result upward.
For an independent benchmark, compare against the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics for SOC 13-2054 — Financial Risk Specialists, published annually at bls.gov/oes. BLS reports actual wages across all employers rather than advertised ranges, so its medians normally sit below job-board figures.

How to get a risk management job — the full career guide for this field: entry routes, transferable backgrounds, certifications and salary by level.
Certifications that come up most
None of these are universally required, but they appear often enough in Risk postings to be worth knowing: FRM, PRM, CRISC, CRMA. The certification academy covers what each one actually tests and who it is for.
Risk jobs: tools, skills and workflows
What does a risk management job actually involve?
Running a cycle rather than producing a document. You identify what could go wrong, assess how likely it is and what it would cost, decide whether to accept, reduce, transfer or avoid it, then track whether the treatment actually happened. The register is the artifact people see. The cycle is the job.
What is the difference between enterprise risk and operational risk?
Enterprise risk looks across the whole organization and aggregates exposure so a board can see it in one place, including strategic and reputational risk. Operational risk is narrower and concrete: process failures, people, systems and external events. Operational risk feeds enterprise risk, and the two are usually held by different people.
Do I need a certification to get a risk management job?
Not to get hired, but it helps you get read. CRISC is the most common credential in technology and IT risk. Financial services often looks for FRM or PRM. In model risk, a quantitative degree carries more weight than any certification. Employers screen on the credential and hire on the evidence.
How do I move into risk management from audit or compliance?
It is one of the shortest moves in the field, because auditors and compliance analysts already gather evidence and test controls. The gap is forward-looking assessment rather than backward-looking testing. Ask to run one risk assessment end to end, then use it as your work sample.
What is model risk management and who hires for it?
Independent validation of models by people who did not build them, covering the assumptions, the data, the performance and the limits. It has been standard in banking under SR 11-7 for over a decade, and is spreading wherever machine learning drives decisions about people, credit or eligibility.
What tools do risk teams use?
A GRC platform holds the register, the taxonomy and the workflow. Underneath that sits far more spreadsheet work than vendors admit. Familiarity with any one major platform transfers to the others, because the underlying model of risks, controls, assessments and issues is nearly identical across them.
What does a chief risk officer do that a risk manager does not?
Owns risk appetite with the board and aggregates exposure across every category into a single view. A risk manager runs the framework. A chief risk officer decides how much risk the organization is willing to carry, and has the standing to say when a decision exceeds it.
Is risk management a good field to move into right now?
The demand is structural rather than cyclical. Every new regulatory obligation, from operational resilience rules to the EU AI Act, creates assessment and reporting work that someone has to own. Roles combining traditional risk discipline with AI and model exposure are the least crowded part of the market.
Related risk management roles
Risk management spans several specialisms that hire separately but share a talent pool:
- Risk analyst jobs and risk manager jobs — the core enterprise risk ladder.
- Model risk manager jobs — SR 11-7 model validation, now expanding to cover AI and machine-learning models.
- Third-party risk jobs — vendor due diligence and supply chain risk, including AI vendor assessment.
- Chief risk officer jobs — the executive seat owning risk appetite and board reporting.
- Governance risk compliance jobs and internal audit jobs — the control and assurance sides of the same programme.
Hiring for one of these instead? The GRC and AI governance hiring toolkit has ready-to-edit job description templates, and the career guides map each path.
